Everything would have been fine if Joe went up to featherweight and fought Rikiishi in his own weight class

Rikishi would never be satisfied. If Joe, the street rat with no training, had to go up to meet Rikishi's level, it would be seen as sacrilege against his supposed natural state. If he couldn't take on a guy under his weight class with no professional equipment living under a bridge, how was he supposed to be the better man.

I used to work with a guy that did mma and he'd show up to work looking like he got hit by a bus and asking why he keeps doing it. Absolutely insane sport. Sports centered around martial arts in general are extremely intense and attract some pretty unique people.

That arc where Joe starves himself because he has grown too much for his weight class, but then it's never a problem again was the stupidest shit.

But Rikiishi was also autistic for Joe, he fully deserved to die. And Carlos deserved brain damage. The only one who wasn't a complete dumb idiot was Jose.

No. Simply because adding more muscle mass means you lose speed and you tire easily. Boxing is all about speed and stamina. If you look at boxers body you'd see a certain archetype in almost everyone of them. That's because they only train muscles that are meant for punching and movement. They don't train muscles for lifting people.

Muhummad Ali (and any of the other fighters who've used a similar stance) didn't just not dodge attacks like a retard though. Some of it falls on Danpei but I don't know if he could've stopped Joe, regardless he still should've tried to. That part of the story always felt a bit contrived to me since there's no real reason for Joe to do that outside of the first fight against Rikiishi when he was an amateur.

NTA but the anime definitely made Joe a just a bit tamer. I recall many small changes but the one that comes to mind first is in the boxing licence sparring match. In both anime and manga Joe savagely beats his opponent even after knocking him out of the ring but the difference is that in the manga Joe was fully conscious of what he was doing whereas in the anime he was blind with rage and wasn't fully in control. That said, the changes are small overall and I don't really see that much of an issue. I do hope that the inevitable remake sticks closer to the manga though.
