The spark is gone but they insist on continuing to watch/read because they remember happier days when they enjoyed it. But no matter how much they force themselves, they can't reignite the spark, so eventually they begin to resent everything new. Then that resentment turns to hate, and they get mad on /a/. They might dress it up behind countless justifications, but at the end of the day, that's how it is

This is true. Although there have been objective signs of anime getting worse over the last couple of decades, or at least signs of changing qualities and losing qualities certain fans might enjoy and require for enjoyment, there's always the occasional show a honest anime oldfag will enjoy.
The main objective problem is shifting target audiences from otaku to international normalfag audiences, and skilled animators being a dying breed.

I watched this shit called Alya-san Hides Her Feelings in Russian. It felt like one of those school harem series from 2011 except the characters had no weird/zany traits and the only fanservice was 1 extremely mild panty shot in the first episode. After that it's basically an animated documentary about the student council. Extremely dry and boring. That's how I expect all anime post-2017 to go.
