Again, comparing to Death Note, the Shinigami were mostly just the explanation for the existence of the death note and a reliable exposition for it. But even then there was interesting manipulation of them for their own use, such as Light using Ryuk's presence during the bus hijack scene, getting him to find the cameras in his room, along with manipulating Rem to sacrifice herself to kill L. and Mello getting that one shinigami to remove the helmets of the special forces.

But here they feel much more useless and interesting despite having more of them available and with differences in their powers etc. I keep repeating myself but it is inconceivable that the duo that did Death Note, for all its faults, could drop the ball like this.

The art isn't the best. I honestly think early bakuman peaked on the semi-realism style, and how it got later was pretty comfy for the tone.
Death note was a bit scratchy but tone wise was on point.
The art for PE doesn't really fit it I don't think. I think more like bakuman, especially for the angels, make them "cute" and feel innocent/pure might have been a better direction. They just look like shinigami rejects as they are except nasse.

I have no idea where this story is going. This chapter was just a neat(?) bow on it i guess, just a "they all lived happily ever after" ending. My only theory so far was that this is going to turn out to be just some stupid simulation by god, like "oh, so this is what would happen if i made a god selection, glad i'm not doing that".

That too, but I remember really being convinced by their thought process during Bakuman, in terms of "traditional untraditional battle manga". That is to say, having the feeling of typical shonen in terms of good guy bad guy and cool designs, but having the battles and powers not be immediately physical and violent. No beams and swords but rather mind control which sounds fascinating in what would happen during the series, mind games, who can you trust etc.

The ambiguity allowed me to come up with something way better than what they'd probably manage themselves had they actually made that manga in real life, which Platinum End kind of proves.

i still think the base premise of PE works, but ohba did not know what it wanted to be. it tried to have his cake and eat it too.
no character ever uses the powers creatively, the most brain-y thing we see someone do is mukaido hitting a bunch of doctors to profile candidates and find them without leaving himself vulnerable. only the two villains ever test their powers but even they do barely anything creative with them

what the characters in Bakuman were saying, i.e. what Ohba researched, is all well and good and based on real research.(Not counting the fact that none of it is original and has been done before. Traditional non-traditional battle manga is just Jojo part3 and beyond)
But Ohba himself can't pull it off. Death Note worked not because it was a non-traditional battle manga, but because it was a detective story and most importantly, it used a topic that inspires people to think about, which is lampshaded at the end of the original death note one shot "what would YOU do if you had a death note?"
Platinum End could have done something like that too with the arrows or reversi with the mind control, but Ohba trying not to do a second Death Note fucked it up.

Yeah, I'm sure there's difficulty in avoiding repeating yourself as you know people would criticize you for just making the same story again with superficial changes. Probably one of the reasons Mirai is the polar opposite of Light (which in turn makes him a lot less interesting). The part that should make him interesting, having the white arrows and thus being deadly but valuing life so much that he chooses not to use them is an interesting wrinkle, but as anons mentioned during all those moments in real time, the end result was the same as if he had killed, since other characters would sacrifice themselves to kill the imminent threats.

I stand by that the wings were the major issue. I get the visual theming of them being basically Cupid with wings and arrows to make people fall in love, and I get that it ups the challenge in how to use the arrows since consciously using your wings allows you to avoid getting hit, but it didn't result in anything. It should have just been red arrows all the time and be interesting how different people used them to manipulate the metaphorical battlefield.

I think what a few anons have said makes the most sense, the wings kind of ruin the mindgame of it all. It's the wings that allowed a lot of the nonsense bullshit (sentai stuff in particular) to even happen.
There's some ideas but they all fall flat because "why not just fly away?" became the default response to everything.

I'd say part 4 was specifically the peak of it, it's when you had the weirder powers start to manifest and a majority of fights didn't end in anyone dying, that only came about later on.
And I agree, death note wasn't even all that original if we talk about genre; it was somewhere between a more 'mature' toned detective conan and less adult lupin III but instead of theft it was about murder via fantasy means.

Mirai actually starts getting vaguely more a personality late in the series. I think if he was obsessed with happiness early on to the point he would straight up kill or hurt people for "the greater good" instead of his pacifism it could have made for a more interesting character. The closest we get to him being a decent character is when he goes to just drop Saki and makes her beg for her life..
