what the characters in Bakuman were saying, i.e. what Ohba researched, is all well and good and based on real research.(Not counting the fact that none of it is original and has been done before. Traditional non-traditional battle manga is just Jojo part3 and beyond)
But Ohba himself can't pull it off. Death Note worked not because it was a non-traditional battle manga, but because it was a detective story and most importantly, it used a topic that inspires people to think about, which is lampshaded at the end of the original death note one shot "what would YOU do if you had a death note?"
Platinum End could have done something like that too with the arrows or reversi with the mind control, but Ohba trying not to do a second Death Note fucked it up.
