One Piece has always been doing a destiny thing and the argument that "destiny is bad!" is entirely an American complaint.

If destiny exists, it means (You) don't have infinite potential. It means (You) can't just suddenly become better than everyone else by willing it. It means (You) will be overshadowed by people who are naturally more suited for success. Rock Lee is not and never has been the main character of Naruto outside of his chibi gag series. Neji was not Naruto's main rival or the central antithesis of the series to overcome.

Luffy by his very nature is going to achieve great things. Not only that, he's the main character of his series. He's not going to sit on his island and become a cashier, nor is he going to get killed off 30% of the way into his journey. If he does, then he's no longer the main character. (You) are not a main character. (You) do not have the traits needed to steer your life. (You) will live in mediocrity, all the things (You) can do mean jack shit if (You) don't do them.

That's how you know the fandom is a cult. I slowly faded out and stopped reading somewhere in Wano.

The transformation itself is fine. Better than the last two gears in design imo. I'll have to see how the series ends and how the whole fate stuff ends up by then to really make a judgment. The introduction of the Nika Nika fruit certainly was clumsy though.

I had already been jaded with respect to One Piece in Dressrosa (and dropped it for a couple years back then). You guys are late. It's still worth continuing though just due to how big it is. I'd rather experience it firsthand while it's going than inevitably learn everything through osmosis once the series ends.

I think it has to do with the fact that One Piece has existed for almost 30 years. There's no doubt that Oda and his team has made up shit as they went along.

For example, haki was made up to counter strong fruits, something that didn't exist early. Gear 5 was basically a cheap way to make sense that Luffy could beat anyone, no matter how strong. Gear 5 was their solution to that.

I am fine with the concept of gear 5, as in Luffy can make the world around him rubbery. That is fine, that is cool, every awakened Paramecia we know do that

I am not fine with how wildly different he acts in Gear 5, fucker is basically an entire different character in that mode. I also dislike how suddenly everyone went like "oh yeah Sun god? Sure it is common knowledge that has existed since the dawn of time and everyone and their mother knows about it"

After Marineford and Ace dying for real the whole thing fell off hard. Post-timeskip One Piece straight up is not as good as pre-timeskip but the introduction of haki really soured me on the series. It's been downhill ever since so I'm not understanding the complaints about Wano and Gear 5 since that was clearly the level of quality (or lack thereof) it was heading. Still I'm following it because sunk cost but it's admittedly a slog.

I only valued pre timeskip OP, it was like 9/10 for me until Oda decided to fuck things up with the post timeskip storytelling it was so fucking boring; every characters were ruined and annoying.

The one piece fanbase became borderline cultish when covid happened and the series popularity went to the moon. Now on most platforms the majority of fans are oda worshippers who refuse and criticism of the show and are obsessed with forced foreshadowing

Luffy isn’t weak. Although he’s clearly not Yonko level, when he’s serious he’s somewhere around Admiral level — but he NEVER fights seriously until he’s been defeated at least once before which gives the impression that he’s weaker than he is. Gear 5 was nothing short of a chosen one hax asspull for the sake of beating Kaido which would normally be impossible for him. But notice that gear 5 is weak when used in later fights. If he was REALLY stronger than Kaido he’d have junked all his opponents up until now. Basically, the asspull was to win against Kaido but after that Oda clearly had no intention of Luffy maintaining that strength level. It’s still a gross asspull and another chosen one of destiny development, but it’s not like he’s now going to stomp everyone.

Luffy was a chosen one decades ago. His 'fate' is questioned by a bunch of old farts, some close to the truth early (first 150 chapters). Luffy isn't an underdog, he wrecks the shit out of 99% of east blue, smoker puts him in his place, then so too does croc for a while. It's not much of an underdog story when a 17-19 year old outright tries to fight people in their prime and gets his ass handed to him multiple times before 'winning' in a 1-3 ratio.
