I am indifferent to female leads because there are plenty of anime like that. In fact, I think most of the anime I enjoy and watch have female leads.
More adult protagonists would be nice. However this is kind of achieved by portraying 'high school' persons as acting very adult like, so I don't know if saying they are now 30 years old really changes anything. Besides, there are plenty of adult characters in shows even if they aren't the focal point in many new popular anime/manga.

I think it truly died with cyberpunk edgesloppers. Im not kidding when i shit it off 30 seconds in because animation was bad. A friend put it on and we got 3/4 of the way through first ep and hes like "this is kinda bad".
