It's not uncommon that parents have no idea what their responsibilities are to their children outside of keeping them alive and out of danger.

Obviously she's not meant to be mom of the year or anything. I think she always wanted to get along with Yuu, but she was just so fixated on her own talent that beyond providing for his basic needs, her career would always take precedence over him. Yuu for his part stopped trying to reach out because she wasn't responding, and probably grew to resent her to some degree — hardly something you can fault him for, but you can see why he'd feel partially responsible.
