I don't get how /a/ is still so elitist about dubbed even in 2025.

In my country (Brazil) the dubs are better than the original for 99% of people. They localize the jokes and references, and they also reframe the dialogue to be less of that awkward Japanese formality. The quality of western dubs is also quickly overtaking eastern ones. And finally, being able to fully focus on the animation as opposed to having to read the subs brings a lot of comfort, no matter how quickly you can read it. So the final product is way more palatable for the western casual audience.

Now don't get me wrong: as hobbyists that appreciate Japanese culture I understand that most people here prefer to watch the original audio. But it's not reasonable to expect normalfags to do the same. This is like looking at fish in an aquarium and saying "wow what a bunch of retards why don't they just get out and start walking like humans", it's unrealistic and they are doing what is better for themselves.

Nobody currently does dubbing of live action foreign language films in English speaking media and it hasn't been done since maybe the '80s with Hong Kong movies, which weren't mainstream hits by any means anyway. Right now it's 100% subs, no exceptions.

That means anglofats have very little dubbing tradition or infrastructure and have zero capacity for post-dubbing acting or directing (as opposed to voice performances that made in a booth then animated afterwards). They're somehow worse now than amateurs off the street were in the '90s.

There are some decent dubs out there, even recently. I've been watching some more shows both dubbed and subbed since I've started introducing more anime to my family, since they don't mind subs but prefer dubs a small amount, and quite a few recent/semi-recent shows like SpyXFamily, Yuru Camp, and Apotehcary Diaries have dubs that are pretty decent, at least for a casual watch. Probably one of the biggest surprises was Kemono Friends's dub, which was shockingly almost on par with the original in most ways.
