the manga is based on a book and only covers the first arc, which is why the manga doesnโ€™t do anything to resolve the side stuff like toady and super clit

>is the message that being a samurai fucking sucks and isnt worth it?
The message is told you directly in chapter 1: feudalism is a system that can exists only where a few sadists in power make a lot of masochists suffer. It's a critique of the samurai, which is nothing more than a slave that gives away his humanity to become a tool of murder for a system that doesn't give a fuck about him.
>what about the toad nigga and the girl with steroid clit?
If you notice, every strong samurai is deformed: six-fingered, blind and lame, amputee etc.
Those two are just part of the moral: the samurai is a monster, a beast, not a human being, something disgusting.

>the manga is based on a book
The manga only uses the book narrative as a framing device, 90% of the stuff was made up by the mangaka

Yes, it's about toxic masculinity and authoritarianism.
Thank science we've moved past that and unaccountable elites don't exist in our liberal democracies.

It's much harder for them to just murder you with impunity now, that counts as progress. Unless you're one of those masochists who wants a samurai to test his sword on you for kicks.

japan seems to have gone through a 'samurai were actually bad and not noble' movement, probably as a result of wwii and the suicidal mentality that the military had. ichigeki does something similar with knocking off that rose tinted romantic image people have with the caste system. but on the other hand there's ooku and all the Shinsengumi manga's that lionise the period.

reality is its probably somewhere in the middle, terrible for most people but stability has its value. just like every other culture from, knights to pirates and Vikings, cowboys and Rome

That final chapter sure is soul crushing. The official record completely erases the depths of their struggles and the pinnacle of strength each of them achieved. And then there's that bit to appease the lord's whims by utterly trampling Gennosuke's pride all under the guise of samurai spirit. What a beautiful spectacle of despair. It's no wonder the author was like "I need a break from this despair" and didn't adapt the rest of the fights.
