Anyone here have any thoughts on this one? I kind of stumbled across it by pure happenstance while perusing Tubi. I'm only 5 episodes in, but I'm definitely a little hooked, ngl. I've heard it has a really shitty exposition dump later on - but rn, I'm really enjoying it. Definitely see some echoes of Serial Experiments Lain. Idk, just wondering why this one isn't talked about more.

The first 13 episodes are excellent and very atmospheric. The 14th episode is 90 minutes of exposition, and is perhaps the worst episode of anime I've ever watched. The 15th episode was underwhelming for me, though maybe I was just burnt out from the previous episode. Apparently the anime was supposed to be 26 episodes but they were unable to complete them for whatever reason, so the last two episodes are essentially cramming in 13 episodes worth of lore and plot development.

Overall, a very flawed series, but one that I still think is worth watching. Just prepare yourself for that 14th episode, don't go in blind like I did.

The 2 guys on a park bench episode is a great filter. One of my all time favourite shows.

Most kids these days hear "pacing issues" and instantly think dragging. The old Japanese ovas usually suffer from the opposite problem, they're compelled to shove sometimes 1000 minute long would be shows into 100 minutes of ova.
Key avoids that at first but then it doesn't.

for me the issue not the the exposition dumb in the final episodes, but rather the plot twist basically the title is a lie and the girl is just autistic with super natural powers

Really? When I think of pacing issues, something like Gundam Quacks comes to mind - it's too slow at times and too fast elsewhere. It's like switching between a slow-down and a speed-up button all the time and it's grating.

Episode 14 is one of the most insane things I have ever seen in anime/TV/movies, its literally 50+ minutes of 2 people sitting in a park exposition dumping. Its actually crazy that nobody stepped in behind the scenes and said this is literally the worst possible way to tell people what is happening in our story.

Why did they even introduce the idea that the Russian assassin might have raped Key's mom and he is actually her father. Its brought up once in a weird flashback scene and never elaborated on or mentioned.

The opening is really good. I like how atmospheric it is. I feel like nowadays openings are really similar to one another.

Key is a series that I found very memorable, especially for its very surreal and artsy cinematic direction. The soundtrack is great too. I wish I had found it much earlier in my life. I owe it to the tumblr account “nothing for kings” for making me aware of Key.
