More than simply calling it “right”, the story should’ve just addressed how desperate the whole situation was and how little alternatives paradis had.
I think if Eren’s final breakdown was about how guilty he feels yet how he had no other choice to save his friends and the island instead of “mhu mikasa for 10 years at least” people would’ve accepted more the tonal shift.
