It can be, yeah. The body can reject the drugs in a similar way to Pii-tan, here. Carbon monoxide can be even worse if you end up surviving with brain damage. Or you can miss with a bullet (or a shotgun, like I saw at one point) and fuck yourself even worse than you were before you decided to off yourself.

And then there's your family left behind after you off yourself. Suicide turns into a cancer that infects whole families sometimes, especially if a family member finds the body. Fucks them up for life. It's just not worth it. Not the hassle, not the bullshit suffering you inflict on others, and not the risk of not succeeding and fucking yourself up even worse.

I have always placed Black Paradox on the higher tier of my personal preference of Ito stories but I always feel like the shadow dude kind got lost in the shuffle. I kind of liked the bait a switch. Imagine being an Ito monster and you think you're going to be the big bad of the story and then it turns out you were after one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

It was all caused by their connections to the other side/paradise, they had an obsession or a hangup that was causing them to desire suicide, which they managed to separate from, and in doing so created a gate. Whatshername with the tumor causing her anxiety, the other girl with the reflection and her scarring, guy and his doppelganger/shadow we didn't really see the resolution of but it still ended with his shadow being separated from him and turning into a gate the same as Pii-tan's stomach and the rest.
The robot is the one that doesn't really fit since it doesn't have anything to do with stomachs and Pii-tan never really separated from it, he just kinda grew a gate on his own and then exploded, but I guess maybe that's why he exploded
Anyway they either embraced or fixed their suicidal issues and literally and figuratively passed beyond death to reach enlightenment. Ito isn't really the kind of author that maps out things 1 to 1 to higher concepts like that anyway, like Pii-tan probably had a robot because he wanted to give a robot a soul and make it explore the afterlife before he even had any of the rest of the ideas for the story but it's one of those kinda packages of concepts that often come together, ideas that are close together in ideaspace.

I didn't understand the story, especially the final part.
I understand that one of them transformed into a robot with his soul, the other three did strange things and now have portals to paradise that only they can access. But why do they seem to be completely different people after returning from the portal? Did they gain powers or are they simply still humans who can access those portals? What will they do after the end? Will they try to save the world or will they just follow destiny? I really don't understand this last part.

Then they tried to cut up peoples' souls to make jewellery from them.
Then they tried to help the government harvest peoples' souls for energy.
At no point did they stop to think "Hey, maybe we shouldn't be grabbing souls from the afterlife to cut up and use as glorified nuclear rods."
And then they're surprised to find out later that a future where soul power is ubiquitous ends with the metaphysical underpinnings of human existence coming undone?
