Hand drawn shit will almost always look better than even pretty decent CGI animu, even on a low ass budget. You have to go pretty damn low budget with hand drawn (reducing the frames, zooming in on stills instead of moving anything, only animating the absolute minimum parts necessary) before hand drawns starts to look worse than CG, and that's usual reserved for porn.
CG just looks.. lifeless. It never looks like a living thing in the world it belongs in, it almost always sticks out as a "model" rather than something that would organically exist in that world, even when sourrounded by other CG. Maybe it's not even that "The animation is bad", but that the gesamtkunstwerk doesn't reach the suspension of disbelief required to get invested?
I wonder if this will be different for kids who inherently grew up with CGI heavy animation.
