It all serves the comedy at the end of the day, but the setup, subtext, and themes are actually exceptional. How Alexia's rising points towards Cid's code of conduct inversely to Iris's, Sherry's departure towards Cid keeping what he finds important secret, the Beatrix reveal, recurring symbols like coffee and puns, the gradual introduction of the Shades, etc.. Most established threads tend to develop in conjunction with each arc's fixation on a different "protagonist", which Rose probably demonstrates best so far since she got her resolution early. The adaptation's choice to frame the story with the Japan prologue also did a lot to uplift the reminiscent first arc; the latter is like how a child's overactive imagination colors the former. It remains to be seen if the series will stick the landing, but this level of promise is rare.
