It does and it doesn't. Killing off the mentor is a common trope in fiction, it gives the main character space to grow. But it's anathemic in that Frieren's character arc was completed before the start of Journey's End. But at the same time going forward there kind of cannot be a serious world ending threat like Tot without a reason for Serie to not intervene and trivialize the trouble.

Frieren is a mage for a peaceful era and Serie is a warmonger. So narrative Serie should die, I mean there is no way they will have Flamme be wrong about this
