Back in the day, you had so much filler, you could make a whole new show out of it. Nowdays they cut so much stuff from mangas, it changes the entire context of the story. Recently I finished 5Toubun anime, and it was ok, but felt like stuff is missing. So I started reading manga and yup. The entire Rena subplot makes so much more sense now, and now it finally feels like Yotsuba is part of the race, rather than just poping into prominence at random. Also Nino is even better character than before. Why they do this?

Yeah, but why not give it 50 episodes? It's not an action anime like Dragon Ball od Bleach. You don't need top or complex animation for it.

Bleached revealed to corpos that filler can reach critical mass and negatively affect ratings even of canon arcs so after it got cancelled studios throughout the industry began shifting away from filler and from the eternal longrunner format in general for new adaptions.

Furthermore, studios found that they could spread their staff thinner across multiple one cour animes in a single year than they could going for anime that are 52 eps or more, and recover quicker from disruptions in the production process

Making anime costs a lot of money, silly OP. Also you have to make sure content gets properly structured and scenes get directed in every single episode so it doesn't get cut off somewhere awkward at the 20 minute mark.

hot take: Media doesn't need more character development or bloat, people just need more media literacy.

More people need to pick up subtext instead of lazily concluding "BAD WRITING" for not having narrative elements shown and told to them blatantly several times. People need to understand that different mediums tell stories differently and they need to be analyzed in that context.

I haven't watched it to make a judgement about it, but I have seen that complaint lazily applied to media with coherent stories for having some flat characters. It's even worse when they parrot opinions from eceleb reviewers who exaggerate their criticism for entertainment and ad revenue.

Filler was only a thing in long running shounen shows. Have you ever heard of a romance show with filler? Cause they don't exist. They were always 1-2 cour shows on tighter budgets and most of them didn't even get to adapt 50% of the manga/LN let alone the ending. The last complete adaptations were Saekano and Oregairu and both had to cut a lot of content to get there. You should give up on romance anime unless they are originals.

>What happened to anime, man?
Nothing, you are just new.

When adaptations are made, there are decisions you need to make. Sometimes things get bigger with fillers (we have many examples) and some times they get shorter.
Things like Video Gril AI get few OVAs episodes cutting many things, or even massive popular manga like Akira or Berserk didn't get an adaptation to cover all the story (and Berserk still had one or two filler episodes).

I didn't watch 5Toubun, because of the adaptaion, but I read the manga.
In the end, with it is an adaptation, just take the original source, it is better 99% of the time.

(and Yotsuba is best girl)

Emotional setup is the storyteller's job. The audience can fill in blanks to a degree, but you have to get them to care first. A Thai life insurance commercial can do this in under 3 minutes.
