Light actually wasn't fucked when he decided to kill the guy on TV, he ended up killing the only person that suspected him and he pretty much would've gotten away with everything if not for Near shenanigans. Him killing the guy on TV had nothing to do with the reason he was caught in the end.

How the fuck would I know? Point is that narrowed down the search for Kira but at that point he wasn't fucked. The point he was fucked is when Misa was exposed as second Kira and L knew that Light was her boyfriend. Light went from being the prime suspect to not being suspected at all by anyone that was alive. Like I said, a dumb person wouldn't be able to pull that off. Actually a smart person wouldn't even be able to pull it off, Light is a mastermind to an unrealistic degree.
