What exactly are the true factors that divide shonen and Seinen in terms of popularity? Is it the writing? Themes? Art? Action? Audience? Culture? Why is it that Shonen has so much more mainstream popularity?
There's 0 stakes in shounen. MC will always win there will be generic lessons taught, evil guy is bad type beat. Seinen has the opportunity to be way more nuanced.
>>280608436I feel like if writing was all that mattered Seinen would generally be more popular though?
>>280608537Writing doesn't matter at all that's why you have people unironically naming shit like One Piece, DBZ, JJK and solo leveling as the best anime "ever" while none of them even reach the top 100 in terms of actual quality.
>>280608352 (OP)>Shonen targets teenagers and teenager-minded adults.>Most manga readers are teenagers and teenager-minded adultsI wonder why it's more popular...
>>280608692Most shonen stories at their cores get pretty derivative though? After awhile wouldn’t people feel like picking up something more challenging?
>>280608661It’s unironically getting worse. Solo leveling is the most boring generic series ever and I called it winning AOTY the week it came out based on animation alone.
It sucks how little attention Seinen gets. We’re never gonna get a Vagabond anime. To be fair that’s probably for the best, they’d likely just fuck it up. And if they didn’t people would just say it’s boring like Vinland saga s2.
>>280608537quality ≠ popularity
The market decides poorly all the time.
>>280608661I think a part of the problem is that people are both incapable of and unwilling to criticize these series. Whenever shows like solo leveling or demon slayer come out people just say “oh is simple story telling”, and leave it at that. And when they talk about Naruto or Bleach which have objectively poor narrative decisions and plot holes out the ass they just say “nuh uh”, throw out a bunch of head canon, and then the conversation eventually winds around to “well I don't care.”
>>280609390Na thats just fugos. That’s normal.
>>280609315Yes but popularity does = quantity. Lots of series don't get animated despite how good they would be on screen. Same with season 2s.
>>280608934>>280609349I genuinely don't know any more. Anime has really hit rock bottom. It's at an all time high of popularity but people don't want to consume anything good. It's fine to watch shounen and even enjoy it, but hailing them as the best to ever do it? Really? Plot armor deluxe with no real narritive is the best thing ever written? Not something that makes you think, or makes you feel. Honestly it just makes me sad. I love the medium and I just wish people were more open minded.
>>280609390You don't need to play devils advocate. A rare exception does not mean it's the rule. There's some seinen that are incredibly popular, but the medium as a whole is mostly in the manga industry and not anime.
seinen is popular sometimes
>>280609429>Anime has really hit rock bottomMore like entertainment has hit a rock bottom. Movies, TV series, animation, music and even books are plagued by a wave of low quality shit that appeals aggressively to the common denominator.
>>280609523More like our society has hit a rock bottom.
>>280608836it's generic, but that morality is important for teenagers growing up so that they can aspire to work hard and do their best.
if they grew up on seinen then they wouldn't be able to handle it.
>>280609523>even books are plagued by a wave of low quality shit that appeals aggressively to the common denominator.yeah, this never happened before
>>280609523Maybe I've just grown old and cynical but yea only a few songs/games/anime come out per year I actually enjoy. Movies are pretty much a dead medium to me. I don't have it in me to search arthouseslop for something maybe watchable. At least manga remains i tend to find plenty to read per year and even older things I've missed.
the distinction between the two is really vague nowadays aside from obvious power levels based battle shonen mangas. things like kaguya-sama, bisque doll, one punch man, tokyo ghoul, oshi no ko, grand blue, etc etc etc are all seinen technically, but some would see them as shonen. even the uma musume animes are seinen.
>>280608352 (OP)Honestly I don't know but artistically shonen has kinda degraded hard over the years as it’s gotten more popular. Everything feels too artificial. Like some series legit feel like they were made in a lab.
>>280609523A part of me believes the general low quality of media has led to a universal lowering of standards. Nowadays mediocre products are held up as masterpieces.
>>280608352 (OP)>What exactly are the true factors that divide shonen and seinen in terms of popularity?Adults have less time and most of their attention is diverted to work and marriage.
>>280609620Come on man don’t fall into that doomer trap. Theres so much shit out there.
>>280609987I'm just seeing things as they are, man, none of that clueless normalfag optimism
>>280608352 (OP)I feel like today everything is animation driven. Anything that has a high enough animation quality automatically skyrockets in popularity. Why shonen usually gets better animation I don't know? I feel like there are some seinen out there that if given the budget would become popular.
Berserk should have ended how the 1997 anime did.
>>280608352 (OP)Shonen is simply more accessible.
>>280608352 (OP)seinen audience is a percentage of adults and a large one of edgy teenagers
>>280610363It’s because it’s much easier to do really well executed animated fight scenes. Most of the choreography is done for you as well you just gotta fill in the spaces.
Good scenes that are mostly just talking? You gotta do a lot more to make the animation “interesting”. It has to be like JoJo or kakegurui where the director really has to know his shit when it comes to atmosphere, stylization etc. to make just people talking incredible to look at. Especially when the average attention span has dropped.
>>280610363it's the other way around. shonenshit gets high animation budget because it's more popular, which is a waste when you think about it since it's popular in the first place because of marketing so people would watch it even if the animation sucked.
