All these long-running battle shounens are overly convoluted and have a diminished sense of focus. The fanbase loves to rave about the Chimera Ant arc and how it distinguishes the series from other shounen but that arc was messy to say the least. I don't keep up with the manga but from what I read, the "dark continent" storyline is far worse.

Tsuiokuhen is a good, short, tight and focused story. The length, the tone, the visual style, the music, it's all perfect and an incredibly well-made work of art. At no point does the focus shift erratically between 8+ different characters.
