The brutality of war has been an integral part of Gundam since forever because Gundam clearly aims (pun intended) for an anti-war message. Showing bad outcomes, foolishness or collateral damage like a giant bullet shell falling over some fleeing civilians is one of the key elements that set it aside and make it more than cool robots doing cool shit. Even live action war media aimed at adults shy away from that shit but not Gundam.

Well, not all Gundam, some Gundam shows are far softer and actually just cool robots doing cool stuff.
