Why didn't Kaiji just move to Thailand and start over?

Kaiji is not smart. It is a common theme that Kaiji will inevitably fuck up his situation or miss a vital clue until he is pushed into such a corner he has no choice but to overcome it.

Even if he went to Thailand he would fuck it up and end up in some sort of highstakes gambling game.

There literally is a spinoff manga about this.
He ends up worse off than he does on the Espoir.

Because he likes being pushed to the edge.
He can't perform at all if it's not life or death.
