Is there a good way to experience this without having to commit many hours into reading a very long novel? is the anime version good at least?

Umineko has better characters, but Higurashi is more coherent as a story.

I enjoyed Higurashi the anime, it was fun and had a cool mystery, but im hesitating on this, heard the anime is pretty bad.

The manga is actually good but I wouldn't say it's the best way to experience the story for the first time. It's more like a supplement maybe.

The anime sucks and stopped adapting after episode 4 so don't bother + it skipped over 70% of the content because it released before it had even finished and they didnt even know which scenes and clues were important to include.
The best way to experience this is the VN, best BGM in any ive read however you can read the manga which is still super long but shorter

The Umineko VN is better but Higurashi has a better adaptation. The reception to the Umineko anime was so bad it never got a second season so you have to read the vn anyway if you want to finish the story

Thanks, i think i will either end up waiting for a proper Anime adaptation or read the novel someday.

Why they are both called "when they cry"? are they related to each other? or its just a writer special signature?

If you're ever up for it I'd recommend reading the novel first, it's the best way to experience it.

They are both called When They Cry/No Naku Koro Ni beacuse they are loosely related as part of a trilogy, even sharing some characters as expy characters. The latest installment is Ciconia but it's been stuck in chapter 1 for years and who knows if Ryukishi07 will ever finish it.

You can scratch that option off because it's never happening

Higurashi because it offends people and isn't catering to western moderate bullshit.

Orig was ok.
New one... starts ok but the ending is ... odd.

You just can't reasonably animate two people sitting at a table arguing with each other for dozens of hours about autistic minutiae of who was where and had what keys and when. The arguments get so involved that trying to parse them in a constantly moving show doesn't work.

The manga is pretty good, but part of the Visual novel experience is in the larping of having a mystery and wanting you to solve it (even if it contradicts itself sometimes), the manga doesn't care about that because it doesn't make much sense to transfer a text-based mystery to such a "visual" format. The quality of the episodes also varies because it is made by like 5 different artists, so there are some episodes adapted better than others. Episode 8 manga is very good tho, even more satisfying than the visual novel, by not having to worry about not revealing the answers because it would break the mystery the characters are more honest and free to interact with each other and have hearth to hearth moments that don't even exist in the VN.

I think sadly 1 actually gets the worst adaptation because they were rushing it early on.

Not a chance. Umineko had way too many characters and it's story falls apart faster than Higurashi.

first half of seacats is fine. in the second part it goes to shit. around episode 6 or 7 the guy who was either a shadow writer or the idea guy (i think his nickname was BT) dies, and ryukishi can't finish the story properly without being tard wrangled by him and having his retarded ideas vetoed, so the story becomes a trainwreck.
