Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the twentieth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits. Including this cover.

Original title was 輪廻の輪一斎清掃 which is closer to the more plain "Cleaning of the Wheel of Reincarnation". This is more evocative though.

Spray bottle said "wash" in English on the original cover as well.

Anyway, the little sign was obviously localized. It looked a bit prettier on the original cover, since it was drawn in a calligraphic style.

yeah rin-ne and mao have more absences than her previous series (excluding that long break from dealing with appendicitis)

I'll post my note regarding this thing since it has been a bit since we've seen it. The term used for the channeling doll is "依代人形" or "yorishiro ningyou". I have a note from Furinkan, but I can also just post the definition of yorishiro from JapanDict: "object representative of a divine spirit, object to which a spirit is drawn or summoned, object or animal occupied by a kami". Ningyou just means doll. Anyway, here's Furinkan's note:

"Yorishiro (依代) references an object that a spirit is drawn to dwell in."

It is a Shinto term.

Original title was "彼女の連れて" which seems to be "Bring her" or "Take her". Specifically in the context of "Should I bring her?"

And yes, this was a full color page. It is pretty even without the colors though. Also, Furinkan notes that "Lum, Ranma, Inuyasha and Rinne all appeared on this cover to celebrate Rumiko Takahashi's 35th anniversary as a mangaka." It has been forever since she got the cover, so that's very nice. I will definitely post the cover after the dump.

Heh, because of how episodic the series is, this little aspect of Sakura Mamiya doesn't come up too often but we have had it show up before. Yes, like here, the Japanese caption did not give the formal name for this lint roller. It just said "この世の便利道具". Actually, now that I look at it, VIZ fumbled this gag. It says この世 as in "this world", so it actually means "A Handy Real life Item", since この世 refers to the normal world while あの世 means "afterlife" or "the other world".

So, it seems like VIZ did fine with the chapter title, but I'll be honest, I do feel like this functions a bit like a rewrite for clarity given what Anju's line seems to more literally translate to. I am no expert and I am going off of machine translation. Her line was "あなたまさか使うのが惜しいんじゃないでしょうね!" which seems to be more literally closer to "You surely don't mind not using it!" or "Surely, it would be a pity to use it!" It is a bit hard for me to tell. Feel free to let me know what you think, actual Japanese readers.

The combination of her expression here and the chapter title makes me laugh.

This appears to be a depiction of a luopan (羅盤 or 罗盘), also known as a feng shui compass. It is Chinese and I am assuming simply based on what I am shown here. I know little beyond that but it is used by those who practice feng shui.

I was double checking the line in the second panel and I noticed that in the Japanese, the manga is more specific. The term translated as "exorcist" is 陰陽師 or onmyouji. This literally means yin-and-yang master, so obviously it is in some ways tied to China, hence the compass and the specification that it is from this country.

Onmyodo comes up a lot more in Mao.

End of chapter. I like how you can see the cat with its balding tail too. Sakura Mamiya basically stole my usual line for ending these chapters. The original thing she said was "お後がよろしいようて" which was translated as "Enjoy the rest of your day" or "That's all from me". It is apparently used in rakugo to pass to the next speaker, so I can see why VIZ localized it how they did.

I might post both the previous page and this one from the raws and you guys can look at the differences in how they're written. They don't look that different to me, but again, no expert.

I was curious about what term was used here and I was right to check. The term translated as paranormal sounds was ラップ音か。 which means "rapping sounds" as in "rapping at my chamber door" rather than the musical style. I can see why VIZ wanted to avoid any confusion, but I find it interesting that Japan refers to these unearthly sounds via that term.

The sign says "転生祭" or "reincarnation festival" which made me laugh, but pretty much describes the setting of the afterlife.

VIZ got a bit lazy here and translated the sumo terms into generic terms. The term translated as stomping was 四股 (shiko) which refers specifically to the raising and stomping done by sumo wrestlers. The term translated as "hand slaps" is 張り手 (harite) which is specifically a sumo term for open hand strikes in sumo. Even the wooden beam that they strike is referenced by a specific term, テッポウ (teppou) which normally means gun but also refers to the wooden pole sumo use to practice.

Rumiko is a huge sumo fan and as you can see, the sumo trivia was much more informative in the original Japanese. I genuinely feel this was the wrong decision by localization and I normally support them.

Here's the cover of Shonen Sunday where this chapter debuted. You can see Lum, Ranma, Inuyasha and Rinne all on the cover. So, people have rightly pointed out that seeing Rumiko draw her earlier characters in her more modern style can be a bit odd but I will say that I rather like how they look here. I think the quick sketches she does at conventions or for giveaways might not be the most indicative of her skill level. And admittedly, this was ten years ago.
