Classic, masterpiece, flawless, and damn near impossible to overrate. The only people who mind it are those who feel that it gets too much attention relative to similarly fantastic anime.

It's mostly good. The first half is an excellent serial, but the themes that tied the episodes together evaporate in the second half, and Spike's character somehow inverts from a Lupinesque delicate master of sleight of hand into a clumsy brute. Combined with the nebulous setting and chronology, declining animation quality, and random tone, you can't rate it too highly without lots of Adult Swim nostalgia and ignorance of all the movies it's derived from.

It's overrated but also decent enough that it makes sense as a series to recommend people check out at least once. I feel like sometimes the aesthetics/concept are stronger than the actual show, like each individual episode isn't always great but the presentation is always solid.

I do agree with this >>280737320 The first half feels like there's some sort of progress being made every few episodes in terms of either learning more about Spike or new people joining the crew, then it feels like it gets kind of stagnant for a while. I get the second half is going more for a theme of the past catching up to people but it doesn't flow together as well as the early stuff, and the mid-series episodes start feeling pretty weak for a while before it picks up again near the end. Spike also feels like he fades into the background the more the crew grows, like sometimes he does nothing until an action scene at the end while in the early show he's clearly the focus.

I kind of hate Ed, and I don't think her presence is really much of a factor in the second half feeling weaker since she does surprisingly little, but it doesn't help either.

I think the movie is actually bad and lacks a lot of the stronger aspects of the series. The show is overrated but in a way that actually feels deserved, while the movie's just overrated.

It's quite good. Maybe overrated. Last rewatch I did was before the pandemic. Undoubtedly the music does a lot of the heavy lifting. The movie is bad, I don't care to hear opinions to the contrary.

Excellent points, both of you. I think a lot of the depth that is attributed to the show is a consequence of people seeing it at a certain age. A long time ago I had a friend who referred to Evangelion, after I showed it to him, as "a triumph of aesthetics over narrative", which I always thought that felt like a much more apt description of Bebop.

It was really good. The ending could have been better though, they should have at least shown the crew getting back together once Spike returns from his stint. But even so, that's a minor nitpick in a show that was otherwise really damn close to perfect.

It's what sparked a lifelong love of anime for me. Still can't rewatch the damn thing because I remember every scene, plot point and episode more than 15 years later. Ed a cute. I wish it were longer. Still not my favorite (which is GitS SAC & 2nd GIG) but it was the first.

I have a fridge in my room that hasn't been used in years and I'm not going to open it. Not falling for that shit again.

It's a good show that unfortunately gets overhyped by toonami gen-xers and basedllenials who hate anime.
I liked Champloo more tho.

Doesn't get discussed much mainly because whenever someone does make it a thread about it it's a lot of people going "yeah it's a good show" with not a lot of actual discussion. You see that a lot with stuff that's just widely agreed to be good.

Fair. On the same token, the animation of the movie in general is all really quite stellar, though that kind of comes with the territory of the studio in addition to when it was made. And obviously Ask DNA goes incredibly hard. But looking past that there isn't a whole lot of there there. I still rewatch it every Halloween out of habit so i've seen it north of twenty times.

although the more realistic style the movie had for the backgrounds and extras did mesh weirdly with Ed being more cartoony.

one of the few anime which was able to use the 26 ep format perfectly. you split off for each character to have a few eps to themselves and then it all comes together for the real folk blues finale

Anon, that happens because it already has more than 20 years old and it already has been discussed to hell and back, so whoever wants to "discuss about it" is either a shitposter wanting to undersell it or young newfriends who actually never watched it but follow shit websites like MAL to form their opinions beforehand. The rest of us simply say ' "aw yeah, great anime, good times"....and move on to other discussion

was that your takeaway? because the late 90s and early 2000s was saturated with post-apoc or corps ruling the world in a cyberpunk future
CB's world itself was a dystopia
