My friend wants me and our old high school anime club group to see this. I’ve only seen the first episode, Mugen Train, and a compilation movie, the other 2 being because of them. Is it worth watching?

You can only know this by watching it, not by asking other people for their opinions. Also, it's not high literature, I hope you can follow this movie without extensive knowledge of the franchise
