Fern is portrayed as a temperamental retard who doesn't realise she has to get nasty if she wants to do what she needs to do. Freienennenen is portrayed as a lazy ditz who is only where she is due to autism and her age, not due to anything like training or dedication. This is even spelled out she should be many times more powerful than she is had she actually tried and not gotten autistic about collecting useless spells.

Also the show is literally nothing to do with 'power level', it's to do about time, relationships, existential questions (and associated dread) and 'do overs'. You're the kind of person to watch .hack//sign and go

Instead of the commentary on how online only gives you little glimpses of people's lives and even if they're pretty open with you, you don't actually know the full detail, but since you're all human, you still empathise with them.

Depends. Are they going to write more characters like Fern? Fern's design works well for, so does other modestly dressed characters like say Hitori from Bocchi the Rock, or Marcille from Dungeon Meshi, doesn't mean I'd demand it of all women. Outfits should be designed to match the character you are writing, sometimes something skimpy fits best.

Then why are fights and shit like the magic exams or whatever it was so prevalent in this anime? The anime goes out of its way to say "Look, all of these already strong characters that could be stronger than they are now, look at them doing cool shit like killing these demons with no real motives other than them evolving to ummm eat and be evil and stuff, WOWIE."

And what'll be the big message? Yeah the first 3 episodes cover the existential dread and I liked them for what they were, but everything after that just feels pointless, the demons themselves just feel like filler, like putting jiggling keys in front of you so you don't stop looking. The world building is so barebones, all the towns and places along the way are just generic European medieval fantasy "inspired" and many of the tragedies being just "demons bad" is just flat our boring. It all feels so vague in this anime, the main characters, aside from Sein (the only interesting character for me because he actually feels like a person), are not compelling enough with their objectives for me to give a fuck about. Frieren would've worked better as a short anime than whatever it became afterwards. Story writing and world building is obviously not the author's stronghold. It works as Shonen though.
