Why didn't any of you tell me that Mysterious Girlfriend X was the definition of peak romance anime.

Wasn't this manga known for becoming a shit hole by the end and the author getting worse at drawing?

The anime was really good--the OST, the animation, Urabe's VA. It only adapted the beginning, which was the best part of the series. It kinda devolved from then on with the idol arc and retarded plots. I'm assuming you've finished the manga. As other's pointed out, nothing much happens in their relationship. Urabe's ability isn't elaborated upon either. She was supposed to be an ayy or some kind of robot initially which would've been more interesting. There's an omake which references this.

I don't think the ending would've rustled as many jimmies as it did had the series been shorter, developed Tsubaki and Urabe's relationship further along through their bond--think something like in Kiznaiver--and had they cut out most of the retarded drama shoehorned in. It should've leaned more towards mystery and figuring Urabe out.

I am in the middle of watching the anime, I after seeing these posts, I see it's clear that I should stop as soon as I'm done with the last episode.

I only finished the anime. Even then, it felt more like a generic romcom towards the end than the interesting setup it had in the beginning.

MGX starts out extremely strong and then begins to meander around the time of the idol arc, and generally gets a lot more tame, boring, and routine as the two leads seem to get used to eachother just like in a real relationship! It, genuinely, is still one of my favourite comics of all time but it pisses me off because it could have been so much better.

This, and it's amazing. MGX was grounded compared to the crazy shit Riichi was putting out before that. It's why it's been a joke in /a/ circles for the longest time that MGX was when he stopped doing drugs.
