Berserker is a shitty class. Compare Archer Heracles to Berserker Heracles. It's like night and day.

He was the most imposing enemy by far in the first route (Gilgamesh just came off as a chump with fancy toys), and didn't have anything left to contribute to the story after being defeated by Saber.

This is mostly true but basically all the classes besides the 3 knights were meant to be jobber classes. Still, the worst class by far is Caster.

Assassins only job because the plot demands them to. They excel at taking out the enemy masters but since an Assassin speedrunning the grail by killing all the Masters doesn't make for an interesting story, they have to be useless. Realistically speaking, in a serious grail war not written for entertainment, Assassin would easily be the best class.

Because he is the convenient plot device to show how someone is strong or an asspull powerup. That doesn't work if the opponent is a shitter like Shinji.
Fate route: Berserker served to show how strong Archer really is by taking some of his lives alone and to show the stupid Caliburn projection.
UBW route: Berserker is used to show how strong Gilgamesh is and how the fight would have gone differently if he wasn't nerfed by trying to protect Illya.
Heaven's Feels route: Berserker (dark) is used to show the bullshit skill copying projection.
