Of the people on that list who I can recognize... probably Gen Urobuchi? He has a grasp of old school science fiction and its philosphical underpinnings at least, which is more than a lot of otaku directors.

I can't know with confidence just how well read he actually is
But basing his shows on Nietzsche, Lolita, Wilhelm Reich, Anne of Green Gables, War and Peace...
Being a novelist himself...
