Of the people on that list who I can recognize... probably Gen Urobuchi? He has a grasp of old school science fiction and its philosphical underpinnings at least, which is more than a lot of otaku directors.

Urobuchi Gen, or Isao Takahata (not pictured). At least that's what I gathered from various interviews. The rest of them are far more visually inclined.

I can't know with confidence just how well read he actually is
But basing his shows on Nietzsche, Lolita, Wilhelm Reich, Anne of Green Gables, War and Peace...
Being a novelist himself...
Not only that, but a storyboard artist, composer, and lyricist who's written songs and OPs for a bunch of his own shows

He's a genuine Renaissance man

I do.
But I read what interests me, casually, not really with any sense of ambition.
Last book I read was Robert Henri's "The Art Spirit" after David Lynch passed away.

Previously you have to read, you have to watch, you have to live at least to produce something worthy.
And those people together made something interesting, if most people today grew up on slop, gacha, and tictok, what can they make?
