I don't know how else to start one, and not have it get ignored.

That's how he gets into people's homes. Even when he is in danger of being chased away, the horny woman keeps him inside.

The movies so far seemed to have got really good results at box office for something that was never really mainstream. With third one coming out next year, do you think we'll keep getting more after that? Maybe another season of the series?

While looking a bit closely, I realized medicine seller's main motif are moths, which symbolize death and rebirth.
First medicine seller had Egyptian hieroglyphs on the sword's box. While they look pretty generic, at least to a layman like me, it's possible they too reference death and afterlife.
Can't place the swords, though. First one is like some old devil guy, while the second like a crazy muppet.

The swords represent death and the afterlife.

No need to jest, perhaps I should have put more focus on the afterlife aspect, since realm of Shuuga no mine, where it was said that medicine sellers reside, is place not bound by time and space from where everything originated and everything will eventually return to, so they are basically agents of the afterlife.
Bit funny that a Japanese guy is walking around with Egyptian decoration, though. Maybe there is one real edgy with Grim Reaper on his box.

I feel like an idiot for not getting the plot of the first movie.

The big theme is that, to be a courtesan, you play the game of harem politics and discard any attachments you have to climb to the top. Otherwise, you get crushed under the boot of your superiors until you get discarded yourself. The Mononoke is tellingly a Karakasa, a haunted umbrella that has been thrown away. The umbrella is also associated with courtesans and prostitutes, who use them to keep out of the sun and keep their skin white.

This I understand. What I don't get are the details of the actual story, and what the dynamic between the two girls was. Were they the same person, with one being the clumsy but personable personality they had to throw away? What was up with the brown girl and the guy at the bottom of the well at the end?

The brown girl Fuki features more prominently in the second movie, this was just an introduction for her.
I don't know about the blonde guy, I've read he is a priest of the water goddess, but it's a bit funny he had to be warned not to light a fire.
Asa and Kame are just two girls that happened to enter Ooku on the same day. Kame btw can mean "earthen jug that holds water", but also "turtle". Asa means "morning".
Their relationship mimics Kitagawa's situation with her unnamed friend. The reason part of the movie is a bit muddled with all the artistic choices, but I think the message is to not throw away your friends (or generally anything that makes you happy) and become a heartless bitch, because very soon you will suffer from burnout syndrome, with no one to hold your back.
Asa did send Kame home in the end, but the combs mean they will still stay friends and keep in touch.

Third movie will feature snakes, so I imagine it will probably be some conspiracy against the emperor.

Nice.
Does Asa still get a lot of screentime? I liked her.

I haven't seen further than trailers, but she is definitely there and it seems she will clash with Botan (the redhaired concubine that used to work with Utayama) over management of maids.
