I watched the remake first and read/watched some of the original after. To me, the remake had a better premise and started off much better. It kind of lost its direction as it went past the part where he got his voice back, but it picks up near the end again.

I think the remake had a genuine difference in interpretation/perspective to add to the original, very few do in my eyes, but that it ended up being in service of lobotomizing Hyakkimaru as a character.
Ironically it pushed him more toward the silent ronin cutting his way dispassionately through enemies, already a cliche by the 60's in live action chanbara, than he was back in the day.

This could've been fixed by giving him a voice first, before the skin and eyes and whatever, but I also get that they tried to build towards the emotional impact of Mio's death by giving it to him much later on

The adopted dad had no reason to die with the mom.
Also, the filler episodes, like that roof yokai/demon and that spider yokai woman episode, were pointless.
Some of the animation was spotty.
Also, the OPs and EDs were all forgettable.
Otherwise, very good anime. 9/10.
