Why does Yang's death hit everyone so hard when the majority of people who watch the show root for Reinhard?

I think true to the in universe power levels, Yang carries the liberal democrat cast much more than Reinhard carries the autocratic cast members.

Excuse me? You guys don't actually buy into the whole "strong man authoritarian will fix society if we just surrender our rights to him" myth, do you?

literally one of the two protagonists. not to mention his assassination comes right as reinhardt agrees to reach out to him and broker a peace deal.
yang was so close to getting his peaceful retirement and democracy.
you have 2 volumes after that, and it's a real
>if only kircheis were here
feeling from how much his absence affects everything.

If Yang survived and joined forces with Reinhard, Phezzan would have been reduced to an asteroid field and the universe would be 100x better for it

On my second rewatch I found Reinhard kind of annoying and Yang's chill attitude made him a breath of fresh air after everyone hoots and hollers about their ambitions. Instead of Reinhard becoming softer with Kircheis' death I would've found it more interesting if Reinhard died and Kircheis was reluctantly forced to take power and ended up becoming crueler.

No system is eternal. Democracy is fated to decay and be taken over or provide the seedbed for dictatorship. Dictatorships eventually fail too.
But the only thing that can slay a bloated bureaucracy is a dictator.

it never would have worked out, no one was truly loyal to kircheis like they were reinhardt, and kircheis only died because of oberstein making sure he's not treated any differently compared to the other officers.
this is one of the big problems with autocracy, when you're grand conquering leader dies, the whole organization collapses in on itself.
i think we'd end up with the goldenbaum remnants being reinvigorated and a schism between kircheis, ruenthall, and oberstein manipulating them but being pretty bummed that he doesn't have his perfect machivellian ruler anymore.
