The drama is so forced and the direction is so self -indulgent that I gave up after the first season. Is the manga better?

If you felt about the s1 like this, then this series might not be for you, anon. Or maybe you're just nitpicking/trolling, but fyi, anime was better than the manga because of many great directors/mangakas included in the production.For e.g., in ep 1, the author of Berserk (R.I.P) was included.

Unfortunately, I'm not. I found the shaftisms extremely distracting.

It depends. The anime had higher highs but lower lows because Shaft's direction cranked the drama and comedy up to 11 . Some arcs benefitted from it like the Shimada arc, but some moments like the git gud rant was ruined. I like the manga better because it feels more subdued, and there's no whiplash when there's a change in tone from drama to comedy (or vice versa).
