I've somehow never watched a Studio Trigger(or gainax) anime.

Should I start with any specific anime? Watch them in release order? Which aren't worth wasting time with?

None of them really require you seeing any of the other ones first except for the, you know, sequels.

Nah. Just watch what seems interesting to you. If you really want somewhere to start you could watch Evangelion since that's so influential on everything after it.

I'd start with Dead Leaves. It's pretty short and it's one of Imaishi's first works that predates both Gainax and Trigger. From there decide if you like his art style and sense of humor.

You don't belong on /a/ if you haven't watched Evangelion. You don't have to like it, but it's such a cornerstone of anime and anime culture that not watching it will leave you as a newfag of the highest order no matter how long you've been on the board.

Most Gainax shows up until PSG are at least worth a watch, but Evangelion (and arguably TTGL/Gunbuster) are basics you really can't skip.

Gainax:
>Gunbuster (Its sequel, Diebuster, is good, but not necessary. It has the same director as FLCL, so if you liked that and Gunbuster, it's worth a watch.)
>Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion (If you watch one series, make it this. Ignore the rebuilds.)
>FLCL (ignore all of the sequels)
>Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (The compilation movies add some great new scenes, but save them for after you watch the series.)
I actually haven't watch a lot of Trigger originals but Kill la Kill is a must. It's pretty much the same team that made Gurren Lagann, so you if like that, you'll (probably) like Kill la Kill. In the realm of adaptations, SSSS.Gridman and its sequels are pretty good. Dungeon Meshi is fantastic but not finished yet (most likely getting its second and final season in 2026).
Fair warning, /a/ has a schizo who absolutely hates Trigger, specifically Dungeon Meshi. He uses the phrase "dung meshit" in almost every post. He'll deny it, but everyone knows about him because he's been doing it for years now.

Evangelion is the most influencial anime of all time. You can start with this.
TTGL is pure testosterone if you're a man you have to watch it.
Kare Kano is great a lot of people forgot it because it's a romcom
Kill la Kill is a must seen.
Little Witch Academia is great.
Cyberpunk is good too.

Not as great but you can also watch : Mahoromatic, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, luluco, inferno cop (it's funny), Cutie Honey, Abenobashi
Don't watch Darling in the Franxx

You ain't an anime fan if you haven't watch the Gainax core shows. To really appreciate Gainax shows you have to have a certain appreciation animation as a whole as the stories range from poopbrain to 2deep4me. For once I'll actually allow this rec thread.

>Daicon (just 2 short Opening animation pieces and a girl you'll see referenced a lot in a lot of Gainax shows)
>Gunbuster
>Diebuster the sequel to Gunbuster
>Diebuster movie(just a recap but with added and changed scenes)
>Fushigi no Umi no Nadia/Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water(been on my backlog for decades, just haven't gotten around to it)
>Neon Genesis Evangelion
>End of Evangelion (movie that ends the tv series)
>Rebuild of Evangelion (a 4 part movies retelling of the original Eva tv series but changes by part 2 and does its own thing, watch them just to form your own opinions)
>FLCL (just to repeat the other anon "ignore all of the sequels" they were made because american tv networks threw money at it)
>Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai/MagicalShopping Arcade Abenobashi (fun comedy)
>Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann tv series
>Gurren Lagann movies(recap movies but added some really great scenes)
>Panty&Stocking season 1(too soon to tell how season 2 will turn out)

As for Trigger, just ignore them. They're like Gainax but without the heart and soul. Interesting promises but fizzes out early or halfway into the show. That's all their shows in a nutshell.

>claims he's representing Gainax's core
>doesn't list the film that is the very reason for their existence
>thinks you're should watch Shin Eva
Gainax going from high minded art movie, to cynical otaku pandering ova, to realizing full circle they could even within the production of their otaku pandering mecha ova still strive to make something with some weight to it. That's the core of what Gainax was.

Trigger's fundamental break with Gainax has to do with their goals. The burger analogy. They don't have the same ambition Gainax had. It's an irreconcilable difference. In that same vein, Shin Evangelion is the very worthless money making enterprise that Gainax put behind themselves during Gunbuster's development. Khara is not Gainax and you should tell him to Ignore Them too.

Not even just posting, but understanding references and inspiration in so many shows that came after it. Eva is was just that important.
It's like...you don't have to like it, but everyone should watch it at the very least.

Inferno Cop is short. You can finish it in less than an hour, so I recommend trying that one first.
If you like its type of humour, then you should definitely watch more of their comedies. If you don't, then you should try their releases in other genres.

I would disagree with akira and Inuyasha but in the end it doesn't matter who's more influencial. Astroboy is a bit old, as influential as it get it's almost unwatchable nowaday. We can also say bambi if we want to get far into the past and I wouldn't recommend all of your list to anyone.
