It still surprises me the 03 adaption is the reason it's highly regarded when the source material was just a generic (but a bit tragic) shounenslop.
Punpun at least is realistic, has realistic consequences and a mean-spirited, yet realistic end for a naive MC who became an irredeemable piece of shit by the end. Being forced to live a life of suffering while being forced to put up with all the people that made him suffer, raising a kid who isn't his, while being caretaken by a bitch who only sees him platonically as a sauce of inspiration for her manga, but not wanting to do too much with him while he's being under hard surveillance by authorities is what he deserves. A fate worse than death.

kyuusen no shima is also a contender, but the only thing I remember about it was a post on /a/ saying don't be fooled by the art, it's a disappointing waste of time. I of course thought that was hyperbole, but I remember being extremely disappointed at the end and feeling like I wasted my time. I don't really remember anything about the manga itself though
