Man, I've never seen a bigger one-season wonder than Tokyo Ghoul. It was huge during its first season and the finale episode was a classic and then it became a joke of epic proportions and ended with a whimper of whimpers and nobody cares to remember it.

Re was actually really good before Kaneki "woke up". Which is funny because Kaneki "waking up" was the thing everybody was looking forward to. After that it felt like the writing was just throwing shit at the wall until something sticks.

You're completely blowing it out of proportion. Don't pretend like anything after Kaneki vs Jason is worth a damn. The anime was right to condense the only interesting part of that entire manga's story into a short and sweet 12 episodes. Everything after Kaneki gains the white hair is a complete write-off not worth anyone's time.
