Something I've been mulling over is The Fake Alchemist vs. The Apothecary Will Make This Battered Elf Happy. Jiro Sugiura (most know them from My Wife Has No Emotion) is the author of The Fake Alchemist, which I feel apes the whole damaged elf premise. Worse yet, TFA is an isekai, but it doesn't need to be an isekai. Maybe it was a choice the author made early in the series only to realize it wasn't that important.
Part of what makes isekai interesting is the "fish out of water" situations you can create with it. So far, TFA only really uses it as an excuse for the protag not knowing things. I feel like the same effect could have been achieved by simply having a naive protag unless they were leaning on the "cheat skill" meme, which is bad in its own right. Again, this could be done without isekai nonsense by the protag simply finding a magical item or having some blessing from a god or whatever.
>why the spergery over it?
My Wife Has No Emotion has better story beats. It feels less contrived to me than TFA. TFA has a lack of subtly in its story that's off-putting for me. Compared to Sugiura's other work, it feels very mid.
The Apothecary Will Make This Battered Elf Happy, isn't the deepest story, but it was less clumsy than TFA for me.
