I picked it up because the OPs/EDs are genuinely incredible, but the anime is just hard to watch. I'm like 8 episodes in, does it get better? I bet I would have thought it was a masterpiece if it was 20 years ago to be fair

The first 2/3 of Shana is basically all worldbuilding and setup for when things go entirely off the rails and Yuuji's ballsack drops.
If you don't like the characters, the rest of the show probably won't be entertaining for you.
If it's the animation itself that's the problem, well, it's J.C. Staff. QUALITY is inevitable.

The first half of season 1 is rough. The movie adapts the first arc better.

Slop is something that has all style and no substance. I get not liking Shana, and if it doesn't click with you after 8 episodes you should drop it, but it ain't slop.
