The supporting characters are there to make the bad guys look bad, and to make the main characters look even better.

If you feel for them because they fail, it's because they played their role perfectly.

I don't know how people can get mad about Joey losing.
His deck was SO bad, even by the anime's standards, that none of his victories so far had felt earned.
And it's not like he ever grows as a character and gets better at the game, he only ever wins because he gets lucky or because Yugi gave him a card earlier on in the episode or in a flashback that he draws at the right time in order to win.

Usopp does not even try. He just runs away until he is literally dragged into the island and forced to fight. He also never trains.

Rock Lee, on the other hand, not only tries, but also achieves great results. The problem is that he was the #2 ninja and they matched him against the #1 guy (who happens to be a nepobaby)
