Oda doesn't care anymore, this story is not worth attention after Water Se7en. The beauty of the original story is completely destroyed.

this image is spammed a lot but the real answer is that left roger is the version of him pushed to the planet by the marines and the general pirate world mythos, and right roger is the version that actually existed in the world

I believe both images represent the real Roger in different moments of his life. He, much like Whitebeard, was young and healthy in the right column, and old and sickly on the left. Also, artstyle is an important yet overlooked part of a character's design.
