Watched Spriggan (1998) a couple nights ago. After that first car chase and fight when he lands in Istanbul, it felt like raiders of the lost ark meets akira, but the last half falls off pretty hard. Still solid recommend for the first half though.

Don't forget that Akira is also quintessential Japanese media in that it is a thorough leftist critique of postwar Japan that draws heavily on counterculture for aesthetic power, separating out tourists who only watch anime ironically from otaku who engage with the social and political commentary inherent in Japanese media following the defeated anti-ANPO and Zenkyoto protest movements.
