It used a winning formula that not many anime have used for some reason. Just have your main characters go on a fun journey across interesting locations. Sure there are shows about wanderers but they're almost all slow brooding philosophical shows. A grand adventure, that's all you need.

Jessie, james and meowth are fun characters but I agree those parts get really boring. But some of the best episodes are the ones were TR teams up with ash's gang like the cruise ship one cuz it breaks up the formula and let's the characters play off each other more.
