Pistol is more accurate and faster firing in close quarters, the "rifle" is a Shotgun actually and works similar to it and has a timing penalty basically and you are left vulnerable in close range but in return get a powerful blaster in return. The H-Guns are where the big money is at though in terms of usability and consistency at closer ranger than the shotgun but not as close as the pistol.

Me too. There's definitely a shift in tone so I understand why many people dislike it.

In any case, most early gantzers went with pistols as they're lighter, easy to carry and still very powerful (not to mention everybody was still confused about the whole thing so most people wouldn't be so excited to go for a fucking rifle for a supposed "game"). Now that they're all a little more seasoned, of course most of them go for the big guns now.
The sword are as straight as glorious nippon katana steel allows, with the addition of being extendable/retractable. But no curves.
