I remember reading this after I found out that the movie was based on a manga. I thought it was pretty good. Short action series that does what it wants to do well enough and doesn't draw things out too long.

Both the movie and the manga were pretty good. Edge of Tomorrow is a rare instance of the Hollywood movie adaptation being substantially different yet still faithful to the source material.

>100x better
Not really, but the novel had it's moments.
That said you can't expect Hollywood to do faceless rando protags spending half the movie fighting in their airtight power armors with their faces being obscured.
Also you need a big boss fight and you can't do that if aliens arr rook the same and MC slags it out with FeMC instead of killing big bad alien at the end.
Very likely people writing for the movie decided that western audience would be too dumb to understand the time travel system so they replaced it with - kill the queen to get good ending reset.

>movie was based on a manga
Pretty sure it was based on the same novel as the manga.
Bot are adaptations even if movie basically invented it's own version of the story with couple of similarities and everything else rewritten.

They kept Full Metal Bitch and alien invasion + looping but changed everything else.
Movie was great, but I definitely wouldn't call it faithful.

I like how Keiji's actions complicated the hell out of the situation for the higher-ups at the end of the story. He killed Rita, their greatest war hero, their public icon, and their greatest asset, but at the same time ALSO killed more mimics in one battle than Rita did in her entire career, alone, proving himself to be an even greater asset than Rita ever was. Give him a court marshal and a firing squad? Put him on the front lines? He was already there and fucking THRIVED. What the hell do they do with him?

In the end, he was imprisoned for like three days, then released and given a medal instead, and transferred to Rita's squad as her replacement. They gave him a callsign, "Killer Cage", obviously both an insult because he killed Rita, they can't pronounce his name correctly, and because he's a mimic slaughterer, but he instantly took to that callsign. It's good.

The movie wins just because Tom Cruise is based and enforced practical effects for the exoskeletons, even if the other actors complained about it.
>exoskeleton designs
a big improvement desu, Rita using a helicopter blade as a sword is even more anime than the giant battleaxe.
>alien design
not a fan of the ball with teeth design, but the movie aliens aren't better either, so it's a sidegrade imo.
>ending
arguably better in the movie. the alpha dying in the past is kinda convoluted and third act of the movie was odd, but still better than Rita dying in a 1v1 because they both got stuck in the timeloop.

all in all, both the movie and the manga are enjoyable for what they are, isn't the movie the best "adaptation" out of all western adaptations anyway?
also what happened to Rita's prequel? they were shooting a movie about Rita's battle in Verdun.

>the alpha dying in the past is kinda convoluted
I see people say this but I never found it that confusing. The Alpha exists chronologically continuous, meaning it exists outside of time. It's the server that manages loop requests from the Omegas, that's how the Omegas change position every loop, because they get information from the Alpha. So when Cage killed it in the future and then died, covered in Alpha blood, his death triggered a loop request, but the dying Alpha couldn't manage it correctly and sent him too far, then died in the past. You could say the past Alpha just dropped dead because it died horribly in the future.

It all made sense to me, and made the golden ending feel very earned.

I guess when you explain it like that it works, I just wished that the movie made it a bit clearer.
Also I think the third act is weaker overall because it feels different from the first half. I can enjoy rewatching the the first half every time. I guess that's the strongest part of any timeloop story.

The movie isnt bad at all, at its worst its a completely serviceable adaptation. Way better than others.
GUNM / Battle Angel Alita was also good, but the "lets put big eyes on the FeMC because anime" decision didnt contribute to the movie, I dont want to be near the substances that the director were smoking to make him think that was a good idea.

I honestly thought the hollywood movie was better. This came out in I think 2014 that was when I read the novel before the movie came out and then I didn't watch the movie till 2017 because I thought
>lol Hollywood adaptation
but it actually was good amazingly and better than the original. Tom Cruise can't be beat I guess.
Same happened when Top Gun Maverick turned out as good as Top Gun despite me thinking it never could

I genuinely thought it was one of those extremely rare instances where the Hollywood adaptation was unironically better than the source material. Except for the awful title.
