I think this editor's signature is painfully slow pacing, not meta elements. All the ones I've read from him have been unnecessarily slow - Samurai 8 having a two-volume prologue, Red Hood sitting in the hamlet too long, Earthchild being Earthchild.

Nah, this has some good stuff in it. It is just mismanaged where the ideas don't really come together. Was this published during a time when WSJ was axe-happy? It's like in an attempt to hold the readers' attention the mangaka switches up the story and introduces twists when they feel unnecessary.
