It always looked ugly to me outside of the races. Hell, even the races themselves looked like cheap video games. The main charm was the music during those races. Even Takumi's love interest wasn't very cute.

The atmosphere that the first season was able to convey is a big reason the first stage was so compelling. The series seemed to forget about the daily lives of the characters from Stage 3 on and I think that's why the latter half of the series seems so dull. Even if it's about racing, racing alone isn't enough to hold it up.
