Audiences have changed. Kids from the 2000s also craved adventure and exploring new worlds, so novel settings were virtually the standard for alot of media at the time.

Kids today are alot more cynical and the audience demographic has generally widened, so there isn't really a sense of wonder or appreciation for the world, as opposed to just "aura farming" and sheer spectacle.
