Mantaro's fights are never as interesting for me because they feel painful to watch, because its like his character gets reset five times per match back into bitch mode. Suguru had his bitch out moments but he was a bit more focused in the actual ring, he was always using his brain ironically to come up with stupid tricks in every situation. While Mantaro just sits there and loses all confidence the second something doesn't work. I get the desire a lot of the time to skip to the end during his fights when he has his confidence back.

Its not really just him either, a lot of the heroes kinda bitch out easily in Nisei. Everyone is weak to intimidation. Like I want a hero that feels like he has a bit more conviction even in the face of death.

He just acts way too pathetic, even when he has the advantage he keeps acting pathetic. I feel like Suguru if he was in this situation, he would have accidentally been pulled back into the ring by Hanzo, acted confused not sure how it worked, then he would have laughed and went "Burning inner strength" and claimed it must be due to his intelligence somehow. He would have had no idea how he was saved but he would have gloated about it like an idiot.

I find Mantaro way less insufferable by the end of the manga but it takes way too fucking long. I don't think I would have been able to stand Kevin as the protagonist either, but as it is, his edginess is more endearing.

Spoilers for the next few volumes but reading ahead they talk about how evil Ricardo is after he removes his outer shell and how he's a Devil but with a heart of Justice and he's all conflicted, but the first time we see him fight he's splitting a guy in half as people cheer, to say nothing about everyone else during the Chojin Olympics. It doesn't work when everyone's an anti-hero utterly maiming each other, he's not special. The dMp are still technically dead and buried, these people are murdering each other for fun and it kinda sucks. It just feels like Brutal Chojin vs Brutal Chojin.

Not him, but looking at it, while Suguru used the Kinniku Buster as a finish a good amount of times after its debut, it was also broken up with a few other finishes, not to mention his friends actually doing something. Mantaro, by contrast, is almost entirely Muscle Millennium spam, and while he gets better at finding new opportunities to hit it, it does mean his matches tend to end the same. It wouldn't hurt as bad if we had an actual supporting cast.
