Why is sci-fi so relatively rare in anime/manga? It seems like a great medium for it. Do nips just not like sci-fi?

trends/fads come and go in any medium, be it art, music, movies, animation, etc. you're a few decades late to see sci-fi peaking in anime, but who knows it might come around again.
