No, it's always so hacky and shitty and there are plenty of original works to read instead. If I want to read the faggiest thing I've ever seen committed to text I can just read some Mishima and pat myself on the back for reading something by a real author.

yeah but mostly short stories and mostly set in the digital world, with little to no romance elements
when people talk fanfiction they always think romance and smut and OCs but it's the appeal of adventure in these settings that I write... and I don't like self-inserting.

I have given it several chances and every single time I've fucking hated it. Ime, fanfic writers seem to fall into one of three categories: turboautists, self-inserters, and wannabe authors that completely disregard the "fan" part of fanfiction and just slap characters' names on their faggy tulpa OCs. None are palatable or enjoyable to read.
That said, there was one Korean fanfiction on Xitter of all places that I MTLed and actually liked, so I assume the ones not written by westoids are better. I'm a filthy EOP and don't feel like trawling pixiv or whatever alternative frontend for Xitter people use nowadays to find them though, so I just don't read it.

I started several, whenever I found such a great story that I wanted to see more of it. But I almost never finished them and stopped when my curiosity was satisfied, because I didn't think anyone else would care. It's been a really long time since I last came across anything that lit the passion and fanfics are generally more trouble than they're worth anyway. You're better off reworking your ideas into original stories.

I mostly read novel length fanfiction. I don't often have issues when I sort by minimum 50k+ words in regards to ooc or mischaracterization. Shitty writers don't often write that kind of length. And those that can eventually get their skills up to par. I've read fanfiction by people that went on to publish the roan original fiction and I've bought their books.

I read JP's fanfics on pixiv.

I read a lot of fanfics when I was a kid, but then I became a schizo teenager and couldnt help but imagine the real characters reading with me their own fics and making a disgusted face, I also became obsessed with the purity with which a character has to be portrayed. At the end of the day the only one who really knows the character is the author, so everything else , regardless of how well it may be written feels like a poorly characterized copy to me, and that irritates me.
With doujins, if they are well drawn, I can turn a blind eye, the artist has more sensitivity, I don't feel like they are the same characters but I can imagine and fantasize that they are their own thing.
