Would you consider someone a "filthy casual" If they had some mainstream shit like JJK, FMA:B, Cowboy Bebop, or DBZ in their top 5?
If that type of shit was all they had in their top 5? Yes. If not, no.
I don't really care about labeling people as casuals for watching specific anime
I know I watch some fucking weird out there shit I'm not judging people if they like slop
filthy casuals support the industry more than most hardcore otaku
I'm old enough to know that these things shift with time. 15 years ago JoJo's Bizarre Adventure was a super secret inside club that everyone on /a/ was so proud of themselves for knowing about and now it's considered basic normalfag shit.
>>281144048I hope to God you're not implying that paying for a streaming service means they're supporting the industry.
>Would you consider someone a "filthy casual" if they had a top 5
Yes
I don't consider anyone other than myself in the first place.
As long as it's madoka magica because madoka is top
>>281144150Well yeah but that’s because jojo git a new anime, anons knew it for 3 things
>the OVAs>the capcom game>Wryyy being a popular meme on flash animationsIf the new anime never existed it would still be a secret club
>>281144270My point is that most of /a/ don't care if people like good things, they care if they like unknown or hard to get things.
Instead of judging someone's taste on if the anime/manga in someone's top 5 are good pieces of art, they are judged on how obscure they are.
>>281144023Agreed, I have DBZ in my top 5 because it was one of my first introductions to anime and was important to me as a kid. now if my ENTIRE top 5 was entry level shit, I would be a filthy casual.
If you don't even have some semi-popular but not-mainstream anime like Railgun or Black Lagoon in there, you're cooked. Of course if it's all super obscure pretentious shit then it is the opposite issue but at least I would know you aren't a filthy tourist.
>>281144048Ironically true. Otaku torrent everything or stream it. Casuals will at least use Crunchyroll which gives money to the companies, they also buy merch at anime conventions.
Not necessarily, there are people who have a taste for the normalfag stuff despite having a lot of experience, that alone is not enough information to go on. I would consider their taste basic at first glance, however.
Honestly I don’t think a top 5 is particularly useful information, lists should be longer, a top 100 would be far better at describing taste and weeding out “I just got into anime yesterday” people.
>>281143999 (OP)FMA:B, Cowboy Bebop, or DBZ can be chalked up to nostalgia, but if you unironically have modern shounenshit in your top 5 then yes, you are a casual.
>>281144150I mean yeah, the series only got good when they went on their Egypt saga. I also agree with the time thing because back in 2009 YYH was considered a niche anime and now it's regarded as an all time classic.
>>281144150I remember this shift too. When the roundabout meme started spreading, I knew /a/ was going to start hating it.
>>281144150The subpar and immensely popular David adaptations did that.
as much as I hate that "most boring anime taste" image, it does kind of have a point. it's basically just assumed that everyone likes ghibli movies because they're so well done, so it'd be a bit boring if everyone just went "yep, these are my favorite anime movies". at the same time, it's kind of gay to over correct and pretend like you only like super obscure art house indie anime that haven't been subbed
in my opinion, the ideal series for favorites lists are the ones that hit you hard in whatever way. either you had an intense emotional reaction to them, or you couldn't get them out of your head for months after the fact, something like that. if your only thought after watching/reading them was "that was very well made", then that's "boring". and it's perfectly fine to have an intense reaction to something that's super popular, universally liked, normalfag, whatever, but it's a bit weird if that's the only stuff that does it for you. the thing that you love this in spite of its flaws speaks more about your personal taste than the universally beloved thing does
>>281144048I've bought quite a lot of manga in Japanese directly from Japan, both digitally and physically. And art books. I do pirate a lot of stuff but it's not like I never pay for things.
>>281144270The part 3 manga had an English release in the early to mid 00s. And it's not like scanlations of the manga didn't exist back then either, though its quality varied. I was reading part 4 prior to the new anime's release, though part 4 hadn't been fully scanned back then outside of Duwang and I didn't move on to part 5 because I'd heard its translation at the time wasn't very good either.
>>281144510YYH is part of the early 00s Toonami/Adult Swim category. That is hardly obscure and a lot of people in my school at the time were watching it.
>>281144507Anon it's 2025 and we're boomers, now shit like Attack on Titan IS what new 18 year olds are nostalgic over
>>281144623A quality original production.
>>281144729I was talking about JJK
that shit was a flop anyways
>>281144719Agreed, if you're talking about "niche" anime that showed on TV, you had to at least go to TechTV or the International Channel.
>>281144711The issue is what 3x3 threads actually are as a utility vs what they claim to be. /a/ hates recommendation threads, so there’s this unspoken hidden dynamic with 3x3 threads that it’s “really about leaving your mark and building cred for your taste”. In actuality, 3x3 threads are the only mod sanctioned rec threads in current year, and people push back from getting recommended the same 50 shows (but can’t say “recommend me more”, so they have to obscure it by calling you basic).
3x3 threads have outgrown their usefulness, the chartfaggotry days were far better, a new template would be ideal.
>>281144729AoT manga first came out in 2009 which was 16 years ago, so it is old enough to get "nostalgic" over.
I know a girl that has watched well over 1000+ anime and her top 5 consists of shows like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, etc.

>>281144934Did anyone actually read the manga before the anime? I just checked the archive and it barely had any threads before the anime came out.
>>281144934It’s a mixture of popular stuff being popular for a reason, and foundational anime you grow up with introducing you to new concepts touching you in a way that further anime cannot. 99% of the time at least 1 of someone’s top 5 is just “I was 12 and my mind was blown”.
>>281145034People on /a/ always talk about how manga is so superior, but it's that the anime introduces them to the manga and then they read the manga because they don't want to wait for the anime.
Also it had a ton of threads on 2ch it's just that it's only filthy fucking gaijin on this board.
>>281145056Very true, cause even though shonen in 2025 are much better animated now and much tighter in animation, they're vastly inferior TO ME to something I watched as a kid.
Even good anime that wasn't popular that I liked as a kid like Baccano I would like over something that's well received.
>>281145087It's not like it's never happened with me (I started reading the Ruri no Houseki manga because I kept seeing things about the anime, though I haven't watched the anime) but it's definitely not the norm. Some people like me just read manga a lot and it could take years for something to get an anime if it does at all. And if you only read translated manga it may be that a manga doesn't start getting translations until the anime is announced or out. So that's another aspect.
I still consider people who regularly get into a manga due to the anime animefags though. But I think it's impossible to avoid that happening entirely since people only have a set amount of time to read and watch stuff and so you may not have found a manga by the time it's been adapted.
>>281145205Much better template, at least you’re saying something about the anime and yourself.
>>281145364Hate it because it’s cgdct, or hate it because you've seen it done better? And please don’t just say Bocchi.
>>281145390Hate it because it's boring. I don't even necessarily dislike cgdcts since I liked Lucky Star and AD, it's just that K-On felt super boring to me. If I wanted to watch a music anime at that time I'd just watch Beck.
also I unironically thought Bocchi > K-On, since I at least finished Bocchi
>>281145284I think there's a LOT of overlap. Lots of manga readers will still watch the show to see the animation, a lot of anime only fans will read the manga once the show has finished airing.
>>281145467I agree k-on can be very boring. I think the show is carried most of the time by whether you find the girls to suit your tastes, like for me it was Azusa. BUT some parts like the ED/OP, school concert, or graduation were absolutely phenomenal.
>>281143999 (OP)I have no problem with someone liking popular things, just as long as you don't try to present them as the best or genre defining
we're listening to deep purple in rock iykyk
>>281143999 (OP)you'll reach an age where you stop giving so much of a shit
>>281145034I removed it from my wishlist at some point, probably because of how poorly received the ending was, but I know I added it to my wishlist in 2010 because of a page posted here
>>281143999 (OP)Yes, because there isn't really a unifying theme or preference I can see between theme beyond just pure popularity polling. Actual enthusiasts will almost have a few shows that may not have been well received by most audiences but works for them personally.
>>281145736Correct, but a few bright spots don't make a series worth watching.
>>281146774Honestly you should still watch/read it at some point. Yes the ending was a rushed mess but the series is still an 8.5/10.
>>281143999 (OP)>Would you consider someone a "filthy casual" If they had some mainstream shit like JJK, FMA:B, Cowboy Bebop, or DBZ in their top 5?Most other anime and manga is pedo and incest slop so I wouldn’t blame them. “Filthy casual” in this case means actually normal, which is a good thing.
>>281146929Honestly I'm surprised at how common a lot of the anime that /a/ "likes" is just pedobait and incest bait. Shit is weird.
Honestly i dont give a shit on what people think about any of those, as long as theyre not annoying
>>281147502Not really doing a good job of not acting like a hood weeb.
>>281147921I'd rather be a hood weeb than a fucking PEDO, what the fuck?
>>281144251Is Madoka even considered to be casualshit? Like yeah it's far from obscure but it's still nowhere close to being considered a "big" anime like JJK or whatever. It probably is but putting it in the same layer as The Big 3 or whatever feels wrong
In context of just Magical Girl shit then it would be but considering all of Anime i just can't see it as the same tier
>>281145205Legitimately good template
>>281148225It's decently known in inner anime circle, but not super mainstream to those that don't typically keep up with anime.
>>281144048Correction
trashy seasonal otakus do more for the industry than filthy casuals
>>281143999 (OP) and anti establishment cucks
>>281144192.
>>281149976Similar to Kingdom or Steins;Gate then
>>281144048The industry was perfectly fine when it was being supported exclusively by hardcore otaku. There were fewer shows being made per year, with smaller budgets, but life was good.
Number go up isn't always good.
